With a need to enhance the user-experience of the reception area and attract new clients, Dexus Property Group contacted McCormack to help with a complete overhaul of the lobby at 452 Flinders Street, Melbourne. The project brief was for a refurbishment and upgrade of the entrance, reception area and lift lobby. This involved demolishing the existing façade and finishes, expanding the amenities and End of Trip facilities, upgrading all services, and extending the reception and entrance areas.
Working within a live lift lobby environment is always a challenge. To ensure minimum impact on the client and tenants, McCormack completed most of the work out of hours and on weekends. A key design element of the lobby upgrade are the feature screens that hang above the lifts and throughout the space. McCormack’s Project Managers factored in long lead times for the eight-metre high glass panels as they not only had to be shipped in from overseas, they also required safe and precise installation, often with work being done at heights. For the façade extension, McCormack’s own consultants were engaged to carry out the design and construct to ensure the works fitted in seamlessly with the project plan.
The overall design is a breathtaking. Entering the building delivers the ‘wow’ factor that Dexus was seeking. Streamlined, modern industrial fixtures and fittings, and soaring glass panels give the overall impression of space and light. Clever use of steel and glass, combined with natural timbers and marble provide a contemporary, sleek feel. The reception area is relaxed with a high-end vibe, with vintage-style furniture, strategically placed planters and intelligent lighting. End of Trip facilities replicate the industrial themed lobby with additional steel ceiling panels ensuring a seamless design throughout.
